In the State of Louisiana there are parishes not counties. The city of Chalmette is the Parish seat of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. Chalmette is located east of downtown New Orleans and south of Arabi, La. towards Lake Borgne. It is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population is 32,069. In 2005 Hurricane Katrina presented a storm surge that overflowed through the Mississippi River – Gulf Outlet Canal and flooded most of the town, with waters as high as 15 feet. Chalmette was entirely destroyed. Most of the buildings were thought of as unsaveable because of the toxic chemicals in the water. Another toxic situation in Chalmette is the drug availability. The majority of people who are rebuilding Chalmette are living in trailers supplied by FEMA. This entire unfortunate situation is causing the drug problem to get worse each day. Chalmette is in need of good drug rehabs. Here is what is going on in Chalmette.
