In the State of Louisiana there are parishes not counties. The city of Gretna is the Parish seat of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Gretna is on the West bank of the Mississippi River, Just east and across the river from uptown New Orleans. It is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population is 17,736. The city of Gretna received considerable press coverage when in Late August 2005 right after Hurricane Katrina there were people who tried to escape from New Orleans by walking over the Crescent City Connection bridge that was over the Mississippi River and they were turned back at gunpoint by City of Gretna Police, crescent City Connection Police and Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputies. Officers actually threatened to shoot New Orleans residents and tourists as they tried to cross into Gretna.
Gretna drug rehab is also in the attention of residents. It seems that drugs are a problem that effects most all in this fine city. Drugs of all kinds can be found but heroin seems to be the most prevalent.
A DEA special agent in Charge stated: “The DEA has identified heroin as a continuing threat in the Greater New Orleans area and that includes Gretna. This threat has increased substantially in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Intelligence and enforcement efforts have been redirected to address this – the most dangerous of illegal drugs. Heroin is an illegal drug that breeds violent crime as well as significant property crimes in our community.” The city of Gretna is looking for good drug rehabs.
